The name "The duckling" is a reference to the famous danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (H. C. Andersen), which wrote the story "The duckling". This is due to the bright green color of the cypress that creates a strong contrast to the wild forest, highlighting its unique beauty.
It simply does not fit in - like the duckling.
But as it grows bigger it still becomes more and more beautiful. Though this tree is not going to find other spouses in the forest around it, I think still that it belongs here.
The painting portrays a cypress tree in a not typical front yard in Denmark. It is rare that a front yard has a forest in the background adding depth and perspective and it is rare that this type of cypresses are seen in the forests of Denmark. They are only planted in front yards by cityhouses due to their beauty.
To me shows the painting a lot about life through a single tree, which is powerful and fascinating – just like any human being.
